HAWTHORNE & POE ON DREAMS
In both the poem and the story Hawthorne makes us feel like we don't know whether we are dreaming or not. He tells us we see things, feel, and hear things, but it is all just a dream in a dream. He makes us think outside the box. We might never know if it's actually a dream. Like we sometimes say "oh do you remember when I told you.... oh wait never mind that was a dream" but was it really, was it really a dream you had or was it real life it's just that you both might not remember. There might be a slight chance it was not. Our mind goes through so much stuff it might be confusing to think "was that a dream or did it actually happen" and we might never know because we don't remember. Hawthorne shows us a different perspective in the story, many people debate it was a dream or that it wasn't. Hawthorne see's the world different in the story. He explains to us how easily we can think something was not a dream. He leaves us hanging. In the poem he also explains the same thing, but a little more detailed.
